A survey of sport horse breeders in Ireland was conducted in 2021 and the results reveal a diverse profile of Irish horse breeders, crucial for understanding their attitudes and practices regarding modern reproductive technologies. Among the respondents, 69.4% identified as professional breeders motivated by profit, while 30.6% classified themselves as hobby breeders. The dominant discipline for foal production was showjumping (42%), followed by eventing. Most breeders (61.1%) managed 2-4 broodmares, while 8.2% kept 11 or more. This comprehensive breeder profile serves as a crucial backdrop for understanding their attitudes and practices concerning modern reproductive technologies.

Modern Reproductive Technologies 

  1. Artificial Insemination (AI): This method involves inserting semen into a mare’s uterus by a veterinarian or AI technician. AI offers safety, allowing mares to be placed in breeding stocks for the procedure, reducing the risk of injury. It expands stallion selection globally, as semen can be collected worldwide and transported. AI is particularly beneficial for mares uncomfortable with natural covering, ensuring optimal conception timing.

  1. Embryo Transfer: In this process, a mare is inseminated, but instead of carrying the pregnancy, the embryo is flushed and implanted into a recipient mare. It allows competition mares to continue their careers while producing offspring. Success rates for embryo recovery and pregnancy in the recipient mare range from 50%-70%.

Economic Impact – You will be able to get progeny off young mares that are still progressing through training and competition. By doing this, you can have a number of offspring already coming through the levels while their dam is still competing at the highest level.

  1. Oocyte Aspiration/Ovum Pick Up (OPU): Developed in 1998, this method involves collecting oocytes from a donor mare’s ovary, inseminating them in vitro, and implanting them into a recipient mare. Ideal for mares unable to conceive naturally, it has led to further advancements, such as Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), enabling embryo production in a laboratory.

Economic Impact – The purchase of a top performing mare can be an expensive and often times it is only possible as she comes to the end of her competition life. This means that you have to make the most out of having your mare for the few years that she remains fertile for. Harvesting the oocytes will allow a number of foals to be born each year and give you the opportunity to freeze them and use them again even after the mare has passed.

  1. Cloning: Cloning creates a genetically identical replica of another horse. The process involves taking an oocyte from a donor mare, removing its DNA, and inserting a sample of tissue from the animal to be cloned. This method preserves genetics, aids in reproducing talented horses, and contributes to the preservation of endangered species.

Economic Impact – Cloning can give breeders the opportunity to bring rare bloodlines back into their breeding programme. Typically this technology is used to clone stallions and allow breeders to stand them at stud.

  1. Genome Analysis: Recent technological advancements allow for the analysis of a horse’s genome. Studies indicate that understanding the genetic structure can predict success in certain racing distances. This technology enables breeders to evaluate genotypes, emphasizing improved genetic makeup over desired appearance, eventually helping breeders to produce foals genetically specialised to compete at top level sport in their chosen discipline.

Usage of Modern Reproductive Methods

  1. Methods Used in the Last Breeding Season: AI emerged as the most popular method in the 2021 breeding season, with 40 respondents utilizing it in at least one of their mares. Traditional covering, Embryo Transfer, and OPU and ICSI procedures followed in descending order.
  2. Number of Offspring Produced Annually: The majority of mares (61.1%) produce one foal or embryo annually. However, advanced methods like embryo transfer and OPU allow some breeders to achieve multiple offspring from a single mare, with a few even claiming five or more annually. With careful management this will allow breeders to increase their output of high quality offspring, thus increasing profits in the long run.
